Where radiant heating is utilized for coating selenium and its alloys onto a substrate, it has been found that improved absorption of radiant energy can be obtained by converting amorphous selenium into the crystalline form by preliminary heating- The crystalline form can be obtained by shooting the material into hot water, heating by other means, or by pre-treatment with a solvent known to induce crystallization, such as benzonitrile,
