Abstract

A ribbon tension control mechanism is located in a ribbon cartridge 10. The mechanism comprises a pair of shaped wire springs 12, 14 in the form of dancer arms. Each spring has a roller 16 thereon around which a ribbon 18 passes. One spring 12 engages the core 20 of the ribbon pay-off spool 22 to act as a brake thereon, and the other spring 14 has a projection 24 engaging a drive belt 26 connecting a drive gear 28 with a ribbon take-up spool 30. Increased tension on the ribbon will result in pivoting the spring 14 to loosen the drive belt 26 and thereby decrease the driving force on the take-up spool 30, and will also move the spring wire 12 away from the core 20 to decrease the braking force thereon.
