Abstract

An electrophotographic printing machine may employ a roll fuser having a metered quantity of release material applied thereto. The release meterial is heated to maintain it in a substantially fluid state. Fusing apparatus 42 includes a heated fuser roll 48 and backup roll 50. Fuser roll 48 coopor-atea with backup roll 50 to define a nip through which a sheet of support materail 52 having the toner image 54 thereon passes. Backup roll 50 includes a rigid steel shaft 60 having an elastomeric surface 62 disposed thereover and affixed thereto. Shaft 60 is secured rotatability to the fuser frame. Heating element 66 is supported internally of cylinder 64 and provides thermal energy to maintain fuser roll 48 at its operating temperature.
