Abstract

A Charge Coupled Device (CCD) is a MOS integrated circuit de-vice. Basically, it is a shift register for analog signals made in the form of a string of MOS capacitors. Since CCD5 can store and transfer (analog) charge signals, they can be used for various types of signal processing applications such as image sensors, memories and analog circuit, CCD 1728 x 1 linear image sensors are now commercially available. This linear imaging device has one transport array on each side of the sensor array. The use of the sensor array instead of using a CCD for both sensor and transport function is to avoid image smearing which results when the shift register is driven while being illuminated. The use of two transport registers permits smaller photoelement-to-photoelementspacings than have been possible previously. Since the CCD shift register element shall be driven by multiple phase clocks (such as two phase, three phase or four phase), each element requires three to four electrodes (or gates) .
