Abstract

In lithographic printing systems, the ink thickness on the various rollers used in such a system is important. Tra-ditionally, such thickness has been sontrolled by trial and erros. It is possible to monitor such thickness by simply installing within the roller train as least one transparent roller. Within the core of this roller would be located a photodetector. By shining a beam of light on the inked roller as a point opposite the internal photodetector, it is possible to monitor the degree of light transmission through the ink film on the roller. As is apparent, the degree of transmission will vary with ink film thickness and, thus, such a system will provide a degree readout of film thicknedd based on light transmission.
