The method is carried out by the apparatus shown in Figures 1
and 2~ The scan of a surface on roller 21 is achieved by a
rotating polygon 18. Light is received continually at detec~
tor 22 for a defect-free surface, A valley is represented by
the light received in sequence 22, 22B, 22, 22A, 22, a hill is
represented by light received in sequence 22, 22A, 22, 22B,
