A print hammer 10 is provided for a daisy wheel impact
printer. An impact face 12 is provided at the front of the
hammer and a slug 14 and spring 16 are located within a recess
18 in the hammer 10. The spring 16 normally urges the slug 14
against the rear wall 20 of the rece~ss 18. The spring and slug
are so designed that the slug stays against the rear wall 20
until the face 12 contacts a print wheel spoke and platen. At

contact, the slug 14 moves relative to the hammer compressing
spring 16 to prolong the dwell time of impact thus increasing
the transfer of ink to a paper surface.
