This concept relates to a long-lived target for electron-beam
deformographic displays, substantially as pictured above. The
assembly is useful, for example, to form the face of a small
cathode ray tube.

The target includes a transparent electrode substrate, gen-

erally designated 1, such as NESA glass (a transparent support
material 2, such as glass, and a thin grounded transparent
conductive layer 3)

An elastomer layer 4 is formed from a material containing a
high vapor pressure silicone oil and is coated over trans-
parent conductive layer 3~ Elastomer layer 4 is sealed with a
thin polyvinyl formal layer 5~ Layer 5 is overcoated with a
pattern of metallic silver islands 6~

In operation, electron beam 8 scans the surface supporting the
islands. In locations where electrons supplied by beam 8
strike layer 5 the elastomer layer 4 is deformed or wrinkled,
Wrinkling is due to the forces established between the charges
on layer 5 and the grounded layer 3.
