Abstract

A copier platen cover mounting system in which the hinge side of the platen cover is raisable to accommodate variable thick-ness documents. The platen cover hinge consists of an integral, repositionable hinge unit 1 supporting a hinge shaft 3 positioned between shaft supports 4, 5. The hinge shaft 3 is attached to platen cover 2. A torsion spring 6, located on hinge shaft 3, provides the counterbalance mechanism for the platen cover 2. Attached beneath platen cover hinge 1 are two rod guides 7, 8 spaced for insertion into two vertical tubular supports 17, 18. The tubular supports 17, 18 are mounted in the copier mainframe 10. The rod guides 7 and 8 are freely

reciprocal within the supports 17, 18, to allow the platen
cover 2 and hinge unit 1 to be raised or lowered at the platen
cover hinge line, to accommodate varying document thicknesses.
By raising or lowering the platen cover hinge unit 1, the
platen cover 2 can be positioned parallel to the platen glass
12 regardless of the thickness of the document between the
platen cover and the platen, thereby reducing light leakage
from the platen illumination lamps.
