Abstract

A screen stenciling device and process for using this device are disclosed. The screen stencil device is comprised of a screening material overcoated with a photoswellable composi-tion. Examples of screening materials include nylon mesh, silk, cotton fibers and wire gauze while the photoswellable material may be a photosensitive material which is subjected to actinic radiation and is heated causing it to expand thus closing the open areas of the screen stencil in the illumin-ated areas. Typical materials include plastics containing proper amounts of photochromic compounds, light sensitive diazo compounds and light sensitive azides.

to actinic radiation and is heated causing it to expand thus
closing the open areas of the screen stencil in the illumin-
ated areas. Typical materials include plastics containing
proper amounts of photochromic compounds, light sensitive
diazo compounds and light sensitive azides.

For the purpose of producing images, the coated screen can be
contacted with the surface to be marked. A marking material
is forced through the open areas of the screen and the screen
is then subsequently lifted from the marked surface in order
to allow this surface to dry.
