Abstract

Elastomers containing nitrile and similar polar groups have a resistivity that makes them useful in the fabrication of bias transfer rolls, bias transfer belts, transport belts, transport rolls and other devices in which the control of electrical relaxation time is important. Fo-many 1-f these applications, a resistivity in the range of 10 to 10 ohm-crn is desirable, By varying the polar content of the elastomer, a wider range of resistivities for the elastomers containing nitrile and similar polar groups may be obtained, and a large selection of elastomers containing nitrile and similar polar groups becomes available by techniques which vary the polar content of the rubber resulting in elastomers having the desired resistivities,

Elastomers containing nitrile and similar polar groups have a
resistivity that makes them useful in the fabrication of bias
transfer rolls, bias transfer belts, transport belts,
transport rolls and other devices in which the control of
electrical relaxation time is important. Fo~ many 1~f these
applications, a resistivity in the range of 10 to 10 ohm~crn
is desirable, By varying the polar content of the elastomer,
a wider range of resistivities for the elastomers containing
nitrile and similar polar groups may be obtained, and a large
selection of elastomers containing nitrile and similar polar
groups becomes available by techniques which vary the polar
content of the rubber resulting in elastomers having the
desired resistivities,

Rolls, belts and other biasabe members having controlled re~
sistivity and other desirable characteristics are described in
U.S. Patents 3,959,573; 3,959,574; 4,058,879 and 4,062,812,
Butadiene copolymers having solubilized conductivity control
agents incorporated therein and varying specified quantities
of terminally unsaturated hydrocarbon nitriles are disclosed
in U.S. Patent 4,058,879, and the electrical life of
copolymers of butadiene and terminally unsaturated hydrocarbon
nitriles is extended by incorporating salts having
asymmetrical quaternary ammcnium cations or salts having
structural charge specific anions therein as described in U.S.
Patent 4,062,812.

The present disclosure embraces elastomers containing nitrile
and/or amino and/or amidine groups. These groups may be in
