Abstract

An image master, which may be stored within a photocopying machine, is used to provide a test pattern that may be imaged within the machine, e.g., after a predetermined number of copies have been made, The test pattern may be provided, for example, as a rolled original which may be unrolled for expo-sure within the machine, The test pattern may be in the form of an invoice or bill which includes an area in which coded billing information is recorded in accordance with the numbers and kinds of copies which have been made, A test area com-prising varying shades of grey may be included so that machine performance can be determined by a central agency when a copy produced from the test pattern is mailed to the agency. Apparatus may also be provided in the machine which is respon-sive to the image of a test area of the image master to control a component of the machine,
