A typewriter of the kind having a moving typing element I and a fixed platen 2 for use with a multi~colour ribbon 3 which is composed of a series of differently coloured lengths connected end~-to-~end, The ribbon spools 4 are fixed to the
machine frame and the ribbon is held stationary and under slight tension during typing. Fresh ribbon is advanced at the end of each typed line proportionately to the length of the line. The two spools 4 are driven by separate motor (not shown).
Colour selection is by manual switches initiating highspeed advance (or reverse) of the ribbon to the selected colour portion. Voltage is applied to both motors during ribbon advance, tension being maintained by slightly lower voltage to the supply spool motor. During typing, tension in the ribbon is maintained by the motors applying slight equal and opposite forces.
