A~to E' forming an arc struck from the centre of rotation of the pivoting mirror 4.

The pivoting mirror does not rotate at a constant velocity but is controlled by an appropriately designed cam so that scanning across the document occurs at constant linear velocity corresponding (in a 1:1 magnification system) to the velocity of the photosensitive surface.

Instead of the rolling mirror, a second embodiment employs a curved mirror to ensure that the principal ray is always normal to the platen.
