Abstract

Impact energy is an important parameter in impact printing. Increasing demands on speed, print quality, noise levels, etc., make it more and more important to control that energy. Present technology generally uses an open-4oopsystem with a hammer solenoid driver so that the actual energy is poorly controlled because of the build-upof tolerances.

Impact energy is an important parameter in impact printing. Increasing demands on speed, print quality, noise levels, etc., make it more and more important to control that energy. Present technology generally uses an open~4oopsystem with a hammer solenoid driver so that the actual energy is poorly controlled because of the build~upof tolerances.

A concept is disclosed regarding means for sensing the hammer speed and position to provide feedback control of the hammer driver thereby allowing more accurate control of the print energy. The concept, as depicted in the figure, comprises mounting a hammer 10 on flexures 11 and 12 and mounting a strain gauge 14 to flexure 11, Motion of the hammer 10 toward the platen 15 during a printing operation results in bending of flexures 11 and 12, thus creating measurable strain at the surface of flexure 11 where the strain gauge 14 is mounted, The signal from the strain gauge 14 may be compared with a reference signal to generate an error signal, which may be used to modify the drive to the hammer and thereby reduce any undesired error in print energy.
