On prior art models of floppy disc drives, it is not uncommon to have incomplete insertion of disc envelopes; and when the operator attempts to close the entry gate, a resulting interference of the collet or corepiece occurs with the disc hole with resulting damage or destruction of the usefulness of the disc and the information contained thereon~ On retrieval of a disc from the machine, the operator must manually open the gate and reach into the slot recess to gain access to the disc envelopes

In the improved device, the entry gate is eliminated; and the improved mechanism comprises a bail 10 mounted for pivotal movement and includes a disc engagement pin 24~ Spring 21 biases the bail 10 toward the entry slot 25~ Bail link 19 is attached to bail 10 and rests on operating link l3~ Operating link 13 is connected between solenoid 12 and toggle arm 14 and is moved by solenoid 12~ Toggle arm 14
