an imaging station to provide, for example, pre~collation copying by multiple recirculations of the documents, which remain pre~separatedon their carriers. The carriers may be individual plates or segments of a belt or web in endless loop or

fanfold form.

The electrostatic charge pattern holding the documents to the escorts can be provided in a number of ways. The carrier comprises an insulating top surface

layer for supporting the document, underlaid by a conductive layer, which in turn is bonded to a structural support member providing whatever carrier rigidity is

necessary. One way to impose a charge pattern is to pass the carrier with the

document on it under an array of corona generators (e.g., pins) of alternating polarity to first impose a charge pattern ~ the document. The respective corona generators can then have their polarities cyclicly reversed, or the carrier and document can then be moved by the spacing between corona generators, so as to then lower or reverse the charge level on the outer surface of the document compared to the charge which was previously induced between the document and the insulating surface, thereby providing an electrostatic holding force.
