In a xerographic copier with a platen glass registration edge, a shadow effect can occur on the lead edge of the copy when the document is held spaced from the glass by an automatic document handler as illustrated in Figure 1. To overcome this

problem the majority of the registration edge may be recessed, as illustrated in

Figure 2, leaving a plurality of "pointers" to provide a registration "edge" for manual document placement; thus, allowing primary light to reach the document and flood around the pointers to avoid the shadow effect during automatic

document placement.
