    Abstract

         A visor mounting bracket for a visor in a vehicle interior is provided for use with a side curtain airbag. The visor mounting bracket is configured to deflect, yield or fail in the event that the visor is positioned within the deployment path of the airbag when the airbag is deployed.

Background

         Visors for vehicles are typically mounted to an overhead structural member of the vehicle by a mounting bracket that is configured to permit pivotal motion of the bracket between a forward position adjacent a windshield and a side position adjacent a side window. Recently, advances in occupant protection safety features have resulted in side curtain air bags installed along an overhead structure of the vehicle and above a front side window. However, when the visor is in the side position and the airbag deploys, the inflation force of the airbag typically causes damage to the visor and may result in separation of the visor from the vehicle. Accordingly, it would be desirable to provide a visor mounting bracket that minimizes damage to the visor and reduces the potential for separation of the visor from the structure of the vehicle.when impacted by a deploying airbag

Description

         Referring to FIGURE 1, a visor mounting bracket is provided with a stress concentration feature according to one embodiment of the present invention. The stress concentration feature is shown schematically, for example, as a hole and a relief groove, and is intended to permit the bracket to deflect under a predetermined force that is greater than normal operating forces applied to the visor, but less than the force generated by deployment of an airbag against the visor. The deflection of the bracket is intended to reduce the damage to the visor, and prevent separation or detachment of the visor from the vehicle in the event that the visor is impacted by the airbag during deployment.
