To improve productivity when duplex copies are desired from simplex originals and avoid the need to sort originals into odd and even pages and to feed each stack into the ADH at the proper time, a sorter 5 having a main sorter tray 6 designed to

stack pages image side up and plural sorter bins 8 designed stack pages face down is provided. Using a serial feed automatic document handler 9 that does not disturb

the order of the originals to obtain duplex copies from simplex originals, one would stack the originals in the AN-I 9 and push the "duplex from simplex" button. This would put ADN 9 in a mode where every other page would be imaged on the platen

11 of copier 12 (intervening pages would be skipped) starting with the first even page. Copies would be deposited in tray 6 of sorter 5. At the end of the first pass the originals would be reinserted in the document handler 9; and the copies would be taken from the main sorter tray 6, turned over and reinserted face down in

paper feeder tray 13 of copier 12. The start button would be pushed and the sorter 5 would be turned on by the machine logic for second side copying. Automatic

document handler 9 would now image every other original on platen 11 starting with the first odd page. All even pages would be handled but not imaged. Duplex copies would be deposited face down in sorter bins 8, thus...
