Abstract

A dicorotron (dielectric-coated corotron) may be directly mounted onto a shield with an AC source connected to the wire and a DC bias applied to the shield, thus, producing net DC current delivered to the surface to be charged. The advantages of this configuration are the elimination of any wire vibration problems encountered with conventional corona wires as well as easy cleaning when operating in a toner-laden environment.

When a large positive current is extracted using this arrangement, an equal and opposite negative current is delivered to the shield substrate. It is proposed to invert the "conventional" configuration by mounting shield 3 above corotron 2 and replacing the hitherto solid substrate by a mesh 5 as shown in the figure. The purpose is to allow a considerable portion of the negative current to pass through the mesh and be delivered to surface 4. This construction also enables the corona region to be partially enclosed in an enclosure containing an ozone catalyst. Provision can also be made for drawing air through this enclosure. This will result in a considerable reduction of ozone levels emitted by the device.
