Charge control agents have been utilized to control the electrical charge on particles employed in electrophoretic display devices, Another major influence on the behavior of the particles is the amount of water on the particle. The quantity of water adsorbed onto the surface of the particle influences the mobility of the particle such that if water is totally excluded, the particle is highly mobile in the electrical field, but once contacting the electrode, the particle cannot be removed

by reversing the electrical field. As the amount of water adsorbed onto the surface of the particle is increased, the mobility is reduced but reverse field effects produce release of the particle from the electrode.

By controlling the extent of water adsorption on the particle, the desirable characteristics of response time and mobility are optimized.
