Disclosed is an improved addressing technique for an electrophoretic display device including an electrophoretic suspension material confined between a substrate having a conductive electrode on its interior surface, which may be overcoated with a dielectric material, and a dielectric top layer. The improved technique

involves the use of a preactivation step before writing is carried out.

This step may be accomplished with a waveform which leaves a residual charge and voltage across the top dielectric layer. Thus, during the subsequent writing process, smaller, less expensive addressing voltages can be used and/or increased

writing speeds can be achieved since the residual preactivation voltages add to the image addressing voltages. The preactivation charges can be deposited on the dielectric layer by a variety of charging devices such as a stylus, a soft conductive roller or a corotron.
