A side guide system for the paper tray of a copier includes a closed loop cable and pulley apparatus. As shown in the drawing, one side guide 10 is attached to each leg of the cable loop 15 and then travels open and closed within 180° rotation of the control knob 5. This action automatically centers the paper between the guides and on the copier optical center line 20.

The guides can be brought in on the paper's edge because there are no detents being used and, therefore, accommodating different paper tolerances is enhanced. To insure that the guides do not move after being set, a holding brake 6 is included in the central knob mechanism.

With this type of mechanism, there is a concern for pinching the paper and causing a knifed situations Such a situation is eliminated by including in the cable knob mechanism a device that automatically backs off the side guide by a fixed amount
