A friction retard belt 4 can be utilized having a low nip force due to the positive

feed of the bottom sheet by the vacuum feed belt. The low nip force employed reduces retard contamination and wear thereby giving better retard performance over a longer cycle life.

An air flotation feed tray 5 may be employed to reduce the friction between the

sheet being fed, the sheet tray, and the stack of sheets above the fed sheet.
