The top view of the figure shows a fade-out lamp configuration which provides

variable edge fade-out capability. The figure shows a plurality of fade-out devices 10, l0a, lob, each comprising an individually addressable light source 12, 12a, 12b and transparent slabs 14, 14a, 14b, each having frosted surfaces 16, 16a, 16b at one end, each of varying length. Each slab terminates in a silvered surface 18a, 18b, 18c. Opaque layers 18 optically isolate each individual device and cover all areas

except that of the diffuse light surface.
