When an operator of a word processing system is required to call up a large document and make revisions to the document, it would be desirable for someone who is reviewing the revised document to be able to check only the revised portions of the document without having to check the complete document against the original document.

A concept is disclosed whereby the operator may be provided with an indication of the revised portions of the document. If the operator desires to have the revision marked, the operator goes into a "Select Options Mode" and lines down to the "Marked Revisions Option" and selects it. With that option active, any revision that the operator makes to the document will have a special code placed in the buffer around the revised portion of the document. If a character is deleted or a group of characters are deleted, that deletion will be bracketed by two slashed Rls, and the slashed R's will appear in the display and will appear in the printing if the printer is on. The same applies if text is added. The text which is added will be bracketed by slashed R's. When the document that has revisions in the text is played back and printed out, the slashed R's are not printed within the text but are printed to the left of the text so the integrity of the material is not interrupted.
