Abstract

Apparatus for coating a substrate 11 such as paper with a powdered material 8 has a porous, hollow, rotatable drum 5, the interior 6 of which is evacuated. A porous substrate 7 is disposed about the drum 5, with the lower portion of the assemblage immersed in the powdered material 8 contained in chamber 9. Doctor blade 10 controls the thickness of the powdered coating applied to the substrate 11.

A porous substrate 7 is disposed about the drum 5, with the lower portion of the assemblage immersed in the powdered material 8 contained in chamber 9. Doctor blade 10 controls the thickness of the powdered coating applied to the substrate 11.

The substrate 11 to be coated is passed around drum 5 on the exterior of the porous substrate 7. One or more guide rolls 13 are provided for this purpose. As the substrate 11 moves, drum 5 turns to guide the substrate through the powder material 8. Low pressure in the drum interior 6 draws the powdered material onto the exterior surface of the substrate 11. As the now-coated substrate 11 exits the chamber 9, doctor blade 10 removes excess amounts of the powdered material 8.
