Abstract

Although many of the communication terminals on the market today contain a self-test feature of detecting whether or not the terminal is capable of transmitting and/or receiving data, in the present office environment there is a need for the ability to isolate any failure to a lower level in the equipment thereby allowing quick repair of the system.

Although many of the communication terminals on the market today contain a self- test feature of detecting whether or not the terminal is capable of transmitting and/or receiving data, in the present office environment there is a need for the ability to isolate any failure to a lower level in the equipment thereby allowing quick repair of the system.

A concept is disclosed, which will facilitate quick diagnosis of the communication portion of a word processor, which would allow quick repair of any failure. A self- test capability is provided which can be performed by the operator using built-in circuitry. Instead of simply detecting whether or not the terminal is capable of transmitting or receiving data, the self-test would partition the communication subsystem into its hardware elements and exercise them individually using data placed on a record media available for reading data into the system. The self-test would also perform tolerance testing in critical timing areas. Should any phase of the test detect a "failure", an-indication of that failure would be indicated on a two-decimal digit display. These features would facilitate quick diagnosis and repair of the system. Also, since the operator is able to run the test, telephone conversations between the operator and service pe...
