Abstract

This disclosure relates to laminated articles and more particularly, to improved adhesion of f luoropolymer films (especially films of copolymers of perfluoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene) to metal substrates. Improved adhesion of polymer layers is desirable in the manufacture of fuser members coated with copolymers of perfluoroalkyl perf luorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene. The method of the present disclosure relates to the bonding of sleeves of the f luoropolymers, powder-coated f luoropolymers or f luoropolymers coated upon metal substrates by any other technique.

This disclosure relates to laminated articles and more particularly, to improved adhesion of f luoropolymer films (especially films of copolymers of perfluoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene) to metal substrates. Improved adhesion of polymer layers is desirable in the manufacture of fuser members coated with copolymers of perfluoroalkyl perf luorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene. The method of the present disclosure relates to the bonding of sleeves of the f luoropolymers, powder-coated f luoropolymers or f luoropolymers coated upon metal substrates by any other technique.

Fluoropolymer films of copolymers of tetraf luoroethylene and perf luoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ether are bonded to substrates in U.S. Patent 3,912,901 and in Defensive Publication T934,010 (934 OG 9). The improved method for adhering fluoropolymer films of the present disclosure applies to those prior art laminated articles. In addition, one of the preferred embodiments of the present disclosure relates to adhering a powder-coated copolymer of perf luoroalkyl perf luorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene upon a flame-sprayed metal surface having an optional fluoropolymer primer thereon.

Improved adhesion of fluoropolymer films such as a copolymer of perfluoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene to a metal core has been obtained by a chromate treatment of the metal substrate prior to the powder coating, sleeving or other filming technique used to place the copolymer upon the substrate.
