Abstract

This disclosure relates to a fuser roll for a fusing apparatus utilized in fixing toner images to support sheets wherein the roll comprises a rigid core and an outer layer over the rigid core, the outer layer comprising a copolymer of perfluoroalkyl perf luorovinyl ether with tetrafluoroethylene. The outer copolymer layer is placed over the core in the form of a heat-shrinkable sleeve comprising the copolymer mate rial.

The fuser apparatus for fixing toner images to copy sheets in accordance with the present disclosure generally comprises a heated fuser roll structure; a back-up roll supported for pressure engagement with the fuser roll structure to form a nip through which the copy sheets pass with said images contacting the heated fuser roll structure; the fuser roll being made of a rigid core having an outer sleeve fabricated from a copolymer of perf luoroalkyl perf luorovinyl ether with tetra- f luoroethylene. This disclosure also embraces a method for manufacturing a polymer-coated roll for use in xerographic reproducing apparatus for fusing a heat fusible image onto a support surface to which the powder is loosely adhering comprising placing a heat-shrinkable sleeve fabricated from a copolymer of perf luoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene over a rigid core, the sleeve having an inside diameter prior to shrinking greater than the outside diameter of the core and applying heat to the heat-shrinkable sleeve whereby the inside diameter reduces to the extent that the sleeve becomes tightly bonded to the core.

When the foregoing fuser roll is used in a fuser apparatus and a suitable release agent such as conventional polydimethylsiloxane fuser oil is metered upon the fuser roll having the perf luoroalkyl perf luorovinyl ether/tetraf luoroethylene copolymer outer layer for fixing toner images to support sheets, the life of the fuser roll is unexpectedly extended without compromise to the ability of the fuser roll in releasing tacky or tackified toner from the roll while the roll is used to...
