Abstract

Lacquer coating of fine size particles, such as electrostatographic carrier beads, usually results in particulate agglomeration. Agglomeration occurs when the lacquer passes through a highly tacky state prior to solidification. This problem may be minimized by dissolving the coating material in a two-component solvent system where one solvent is soluble in the second solvent. The first solvent should also have a lower vapor pressure than the second solvent and be a nonsolvent for the coating material at the drying temperature. The concentration of the first solvent should be such that during drying, the coating material will precipitate from the lacquer before agglomeration would normally occur.
