Abstract

A retard sheet separator for a bottom document feeder comprises a retard assembly A having a feed ramp B for guiding document (not shown) into the nip between a retard pad C and a feed belt E. The feed belt E is trained around an idler pulley F and a drive pulley G. To optimize the sheet'separating frictional forces of the sheet separator, there is a relatively low friction accelerator pad D in pressure contact with the feed belt E downstream of the retard pad C. The relative sizes of the feed belt contacting areas of the retard pad C and the accelerator pad D are selected to provide a desired average frictional force for reliable sheet separation.
