Abstract

This disclosure relates to 1aminated.articles having a coating of a copolymer of perfluoroalkyl perf luorovinyl ether and tetraf luoroethylene, and more particularly, to laminated articles having a coating of the copolymer of perfluoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ether and tetraf luorothylene, said copolymer containing fillers which improve thermal conductivity. The fillers of this disclosure include certain metal-containing compounds. The preferred fillers which improve thermal conductivity of the copolymer of perf luoroalkyl perf luorovinyl ether and tetraf luoroethylene are metal oxides.

The fillers of this disclosure include certain metal- containing compounds. The preferred fillers which improve thermal conductivity of the copolymer of perf luoroalkyl perf luorovinyl ether and tetraf luoroethylene are metal oxides.

Copolymers of perf luoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene have been used as coatings upon various articles. In one preferred embodiment, such fluorocarbon polymers have been used to coat fuser rolls which are normally used in the field of electrophotography where the fluorocarbon polymer is coated upon a core member. The fluorocarbon polymers are generally coated upon a base member in the form of a sleeve, in the form of a spray coating of the powdered fluorocarbon polymer and in various other forms by various other techniques well known in the art. According to the present disclosure, these fluorocarbon polymers made of perfluoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene contain metal- containing compounds to improve the thermal conductivity of the coating. According to the present disclosure, the thermal conductivity of copolymers of perf luoroalkyl perf luorovinyl ether and tetraf luoroethylene is increased if a thermally conductive filler is added to the copolymer material.

Several types of conductive fillers may be used in accordance with the present disclosure. Metal-containing compounds are preferred. The metal-containing compounds include metal oxides and metal salts. Chromium oxide, lead oxide, aluminum oxide, iron oxide and the like are examples of metal oxides which may be used in accordance with the present disclosure, and exemplary of the metal salts are lead acetate, copper acetate and the like. In one preferred embodiment, about 5 - 10 percent chromium oxide is added to the copolymer of perfluoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ether and tetrafluoroethylene to improve the thermal conductivity of the copolymer. When the conductive fillers are added to the copolymer, there is substantial improvement of heat transfer, and accordingly, the thickness of the coatings...
