Abstract

Increased stress is &ten placed upon a cleaning subsystem in a xerographic copying machine when large quantities of toner not transferred to a copy sheet must be removed from a photoreceptor by the subsystem. This can happen, for example, in a platen open mode of making a copy whenever the copy sheet is smaller than the full exposure field. To reduce this stress, a corona generating device 10 having an elongated shield 12 and a corona wire 14 supported within the shield has a coil of tape 16 slidably mounted within the shield to control the area of the photoreceptor charged. The position of the tape depends upon the size of the copy sheet used.
