A compact dashpot for decelerating a scanning carriage comprises a cylinder 14 with a deceleration profile slit 18 cut into one side through which air is forced by plunger 10 during the decelerating movement.

In operation, the plunger 10 is attached by means of shaft 20 to a movable carriage 12 (such as a scanning carriage on a copying machine), and as the carriage is driven in a scanning movement, the plunger 10 moves within the cylinder 14 constantly compressing spring 16 within the cylinder. At the end of scan position the power drive on the scan is removed, the spring begins decompressing, pushing the plunger 10 in a reverse direction within cylinder 14 with the shaft 20 pulling the scan carriage 12 back to the home position ready for the next scan. The cylinder 14 has a velocity profile shaped slit or opening 18 in the side through which air can escape, the shape of the opening controlling the amount of air escaping at any given movement in the deceleration cycle and thereby controlling the degree of deceleration. With a large deceleration profile the carriage is only slightly slowed during rescan; whereas with a small deceleration profile the carriage moves very slowly when the end of rescanning is reached.
