Abstract

A fixed bin sorter of the kind in which the bin openings are sequentially enlarged as they receive the sheets in turn. In previous proposals, each bin and/or its neighbor is separately actuated to enlarge the opening during sheet entry. It is proposed here that alternate bins B are connected together and moved as a unit between a first position in which all odd bins are open and even bins closed and a second position in which all even bins are open and odd bins closed. To ensure equal indexing between the bins while maximizing the bin openings, both odd and even bins are connected as units and both units moved. In Figures 1 and 2, odd bins are connected as one unit by a first pair of actuating rods 1 and even bins as a second unit by another pair of actuating rods 3. The actuating rods, 1 and 3, are lifted and lowered by cams 7 and 6, respectively, which are mounted on a shaft 5 driven through a timing mechanism 10 - 14. For loading bin B1, rod 3 is raised and rod I is lowered. For bin 82, rod 1 is raised and rod 3 is lowered, etc. Then rod 3 is again raised and rod I lowered for loading bin B3, and so on. In Figures 1 and 2, the odd bins are open with the rod 3 raised and rod 1 lowered.
