A laser tube is disclosed which is made of a series of negative glow discharge sections and positiv; column sections that allows effective excitation of laser transitions and provides low noise, stable operation and could be used as noble gas lasers (e.g., He-Ne) and metal vapor lasers (e.g., He-Cd, He-Se, He-Zn, etc.).

The laser tube, as shown in Figure I, is made of identical modules 12 of desired sections. Each module consists of an anode/cathode pair 14, 16 and a cylindrical ceramic insulator 18 assembled coaxially as shown in Figure 2.

The cathode 14 is electrically insulated from the anode 16 by the ceramic-to-metal seal 18. The cathode is extended to the anode size diameter beyond the ceramic seal and becomes the anode of the next module. Thus, each module is cascaded down to as many sections as required for a particular laser system. Each cathode has several equally spaced perforated holes 20 to allow negative glow discharge to be induced into the cathode from the coaxially aligned outer anode. To confine the glow discharge within the cathode, the outer surface of the cathode is sleeved with a quartz insulator (not shown). The anode and cathode material can be stainless steel or molybdenum, while the ceramic insulators are made of standard ceramic- to-metal seals. The two end sections 22 and 24 be...
