Abstract

In xerographic copiers, it is common for the use of separate corona generating devices (corotrons) to perform the functions of photoreceptor charging and electrostatic image transfer. In such copiers, each charging device operates continuously as the photoreceptor rotates through the processing cycle.

In xerographic copiers, it is common for the use of separate corona generating devices (corotrons) to perform the functions of photoreceptor charging and electrostatic image transfer. In such copiers, each charging device operates continuously as the photoreceptor rotates through the processing cycle.

In this disclosure, the combination of photoreceptor charging and image transfer functions into a single corotron is described. Such combination requires two cycles of the photoreceptor in order to produce one copy of a document or other input information. If the optimum operating potentials for the corotron are different for the charging and transfer functions, then switching of high voltage is required once per cycle. It is possible, however, to avoid the need for such switching by appropriate choices for the geometry of the corotron and the thickness of the photoreceptor layer .

The advantages of a combined function corotron of this type include lower machine cost and a reduction in the level of ozcne generation by the copier.
