Abstract

In electrophotographic copying machines using heated roil fixing and hard surfaced rollers, it is common to measure the surface temperature of the roller by means of a sensor having direct contact with the roller surface. If soft rolls are to be used, however, it is not desirable for a sensor to be in contact with the roller because damage could easily occur to the roller surface.

In electrophotographic copying machines using heated roil fixing and hard surfaced rollers, it is common to measure the surface temperature of the roller by means of a sensor having direct contact with the roller surface. If soft rolls are to be used, however, it is not desirable for a sensor to be in contact with the roller because damage could easily occur to the roller surface.

This disclosure concerns the use of a non-contacting thermal sensor to monitor the temperature of a soft fuser roll and to provide the electrical signal required for controlling the power supply. Sensors composed of a thin beryllium copper disc and a contacting thermistor have been shown able to grovide adeguate sensitivity for measuring roll temperatures in the range of 300 F when spaced at distances of between 0.005tt and 0.5" from the surface of a soft fuser roll.
