Abstract

To enable direct control over the data bit position for writing by individual styli of a stylus-type printer and to permit integrating the control on the stylus array itself thereby eliminating the need for several hundred wires or in the alternative matrix switching, an integrated stylus assembly is disclosed. Control over the power pulse is achieved by external request following completion of bit transfer. With power supply pulsing on a line basis, a low duty cycle for the power supply is achieved, reducing the need for higher cost supply.

To carry out the above, a structural addition to an integrated stylus array for the purpose of establishing a simultaneous print for multiple or stitched, individual, styli arrays is disclosed. This structural addition allows for a low cost copier/- printer by minimizing wiring and external components. In addition, the structure could serve as a component for an inexpensive facsimile service. The arrangement includes a shift register configuration which allows direct receipt of data, shift control only requiring a detect bit for start and end of line. No error correction need be provided and if scrambled, a request for retransmit can be honored.

INTEGRATED STYLUS ARRAY FOR PRINTER (Cont'd)

Referring to the drawing, a flip-flop 5 is provided for each printing styli 6 in a stylus array 7. Flip-flops 5 are interconnected such that a stream 8 of data ripples through each flip-flop on clock signals 9 which are synchronized to the...
