Abstract

A diagnostic technique for evaluating the misfeeding, e.g. skewing, of the original document as it is fed across the platen of the copier, for a copier with full frame, flash, illumination. Instead of operating the flash lamp at the normal interval (i.e. after the document has been registered fully over the platen) there is provided a diagnostic routine mode for actuation by the technical representative in which the time in which flash occurs may be varied. The normal copy sheet feeding (one sheet per flash) is utilized in this routine. However the flash will be actuated at a selected time interval before or after registration to provide a document image of the document in a selected feeding position other than registration. By the technical representative varying this flash interval, individual copy sheets are provided showing the original document in various positions of and, in particular, directly illustrating skewing or misfeeding of the document in said positions. By holding the diagnostic flash time interval constant, a series of copies will be provided of the platen positions of a series of documents being fed, all with the same time interval from initial feeding or preregistration of the document from the document tray or document lead edge sensor immediately upstream of the platen. Comparison of such various copies made for the same time interval can demonstrate for the technical representative variations in the document feeding positions or skew.
