Abstract

A vacuum assisted document transport 1 for moving documents into position on a platen 2 for copying. The transport 1 includes a transport belt 3 defining a closed loop about a vacuum source 4 and is driven by a drive roll 5. The belt 3 defines a series of apertures 6 at spaced locations across the belt width. As the belt 3 is driven by the roll 5 the apertures 6 align with apertures 7 (Figure 2) in the source 4 to attract documents to the belt 2.

The belt apertures 6 extend completely around the closed loop and accordingly the document need not be precisely position registered with respect to the belt 3 to be attracted. Since the hole pattern extends beyond the document the imaging of belt hold patterns on the copy must be avoided. ,4s seen in Figure 2, mounted inside the vacuum source 4 are a number of light tubes 8 positioned above the apertures 6, 7 in the belt 3 and source 4, respectively. The light tubes 8 are turned on (flashed) at the same time that the platen is illuminated and an exposure made. Those holes or apertures 6 in the belt 3 not covered by the document are camouflaged by light from the tubes 8 and show through of images from those holes is avoided.
