Abstract

In xerographic machines of the type employing a laser generated flying spot beam to expose the machine photoreceptor in accordance with video image signals input to an acousto-optic modulator astride the laser beam path, the acousto-optic modulator serves to diffract incident laser light from a zero order beam into a first order writing beam. Referring to Figure I, where the nominal light path 5 is parallel to the long axis of the transducer 6, a diffraction efficiency of 73 percent has been measured. The diffraction efficiency can be increased to 77 percent by tilting the modulator 6 about the axis of the direction in which the acoustic wave is propagated by about 3 K+ as shown in Figure 2.
