Abstract

A copier document handler 1 having both a simplex 2 and a duplex 3 restack transport. The document handler 1 is pivotally mounted above a document restack tray 4 so that documents to be copied are placed in the tray 4 before the document handler is pivoted down into the orientation shown in the figure.

A copier document handler 1 having both a simplex 2 and a duplex 3 restack transport. The document handler 1 is pivotally mounted above a document restack tray 4 so that documents to be copied are placed in the tray 4 before the document handler is pivoted down into the orientation shown in the figure.

A conventional bottom feed transport 5 drives a bottom document from the tray 4 to a turn around roll 6 and then to a copier platen 7. After the document is imaged, a transport 8 delivers the document to a second turn around roller 9 via a transport 10. As the leading edge of the document passes a sensor 11, that sensor activates and positions a gate 12 to an appropriate position for either simplex or duplex mode of copying.

As illustrated in the figure, the gate 12 is oriented to direct the document to the simplex transport 2. In the simplex mode the transport 2 assists the document to the tray 4 along the simplex path 13. For duplex copying the gate 12 is repositioned to direct the document along the transport 10 to the duplex restack transport 3. The duplex paper path 14 runs along the top of the duplex restack transport 3 to a vacuum assisted inverting roller 15 which directs the document back to the restack tray 4 with the surface already copied facing the tray.
