Abstract

Known bottom sheet feeders employ a vacuum separator and feed belt 3 or roll in conjunction with an air knife or air injection nozzles 5 to separate and feed the bottom sheet from the stack of sheets 7. A single blower 9 may be utilized to provide both the vacuum for the feed belt 3 and the high pressure air for the nozzles 5. Once the bottom sheet has been partially removed from beneath the stack and captured by take-away rolls 11, it may be desirable to shut off the vacuum by means of a valve 13 to prevent acquistion of the next sheet by the vacuum belt 3 before the previous sheet is completely fed. However, it may still be desirable to continue to provide air to the air knife 5 for lifting the sheet stack 7 to ease the removal of the sheet being fed.

An automatic, piston-type valve 15, best illustrated in Figure 2, is well suited for this purpose. When the main valve 13 is closed, the negative pressure created by the blower 9 causes the weighted piston 17 to rise part way up within the conical, variable orifice, puppet-type pressure valve 15.
