A document handling unit 1 for sequentially recirculating original document sheets from a face-down stack 2 thereof to an imaging station 3 or 4 of a copier and back to the stack is disclosed. The imaging station 3 may be used for precollation copying with plural document set circulations. The imaging station 4 may be used for automatically making multiple copies at one time of each document in a non-precollation mode, automatically or manually. The documents are fed in forward serial page (1 to N) order to both imaging stations. The documents may be selectively copied on a drum 5 at a moving document (stationary optics) slit 3, or scanned while stationary after being fed by a belt transport 6 at a full frame platen 4, or manually placed on platen 4
(e.g., books or delicate originals). In the platen 4 imaging mode the drum 5 functions as an input/output feed roller to the belt transport 6. The same basic conventional scanning optics may be used for both imaging stations 3 and 4, being locked at station 3 when it is selected.

A choice is provided of three copying modes.

A choice is also provided of a return path 7 with inversion 8 for simplex documents or alternative return path 9 without inversion for duplex documents (in which the single inversion provided by drum 5 or belt transport 6 inverts the duplex documents for copying the opposite side on the next circulation).
