Abstract

Kalrez has been found to be a desirable material for use as a fuser roll covering employed in the xerographic process. Kalrez, a trademark of E. I. DuPont, is an elastomeric cross-linked polymer of Teflon. One main disadvantage is the high cost of the material. One way to reduce the cost is to coat a thin layer, less than two mil thick, on a 6 to 8 mil thick elastomer, such as Viton fluoroelastomer.

One way to reduce the cost is to coat a thin layer, less than two mil thick, on a 6 to 8 mil thick elastomer, such as Viton fluoroelastomer.

Kalrez may also be used in nip forming fuser rolls wherein a 2 mil thick coating of Kalrez is applied to a much thicker layer of silicone rubber which is between 30 to 60 mil thick. In this embodiment, the Kalrez protects the silicone rubber from attack of the silicone oil.
