Abstract

A flap 1 of thin sheet (only .3 - .4mm) spring steel is provided flatly overlying the document lead-in edge area (approximately 50mm wide) of a copier platen 2. The flap 1 prevents imaging onto a copy sheet of the overlying feed-on baffles or other document feeder mechanisms (not shown) when the copier is in a reduction mode, which mode causes imaging of a larger area of the platen. The bottom of the flap 1 has a white diffusely reflective surface for that purpose.

The bottom of the flap 1 has a white diffusely reflective surface for that purpose.

An area 3 of the top of the flap 1 may be provided with a spectrally reflective surface patch to provide increased contrast for document lead and/or trail edge optical detection over the patch 3 in being fed onto the platen 2, i.e., directly before the document reaches its imaging position. The entire flap 1 may be pivoted away from the platen, as shown, by a rear hinge mounting, for providing fully unobstructed access to the entire platen for manual copying of large documents in a reduction mode.
