Nozzle plates for ink jet printers are often provided with antiwetting coatings to prevent the buildup of undesirable ink around the orifices. A useful coating can be made with organosilanes of the following compositions:

'Wherein,

R = organofunctional groups which include alkyl groups (Ch j...)

X = hydrolyzable groups which include methoxy, halogen and others

and

n = integers 1, 2 or 3

These organosilanes can be chemically bonded to surfaces with hydroxyl groups and form a three-dimensional cross-linking film over the surface. The film can be used alone or as a base for a further coating. For example, a silane film can be chemically bonded to a substrate with the free surface containing unsaturation groups for, for example, chemically bonding a film of plasma polymerized tetra- fluoroethylene to its surface.
